LOS ANGELES, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Universal's "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated 150 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend, dethroning Disney and Pixar's animated superhero film "Incredibles 2."

"Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" is the fifth installment of the "Jurassic Park" film series, as well as the second installment of a planned "Jurassic World" trilogy. Although the science fiction adventure film surpassed expectations and landed as the fourth biggest opening in North America this year, it's still down around 28 percent compared to its predecessor, "Jurassic World," which took in a huge 208 million dollars in its opening weekend in 2015.

Directed by J. A. Bayona, the film stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Set three years after "Jurassic World" theme park was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment, the plot follows Owen Grady and Claire Dearing's effort to mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs when the dormant volcano begins roaring to life on island of Isla Nublar.

"'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' takes a T-Rex sized bite out of the box office," wrote movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore in an email to Xinhua.

"The enduring appeal of the 'Jurassic' brand is undeniable and with a global total of 711.5 million dollars through Sunday, the universal allure of dinosaurs remains a worldwide phenomenon," he added.

Disney and Pixar's "Incredibles 2" moved to second place with an estimated 80.92 million dollars in its second weekend. The film scored the biggest debut in North America ever for an animated movie and the best ever opening in Pixar's illustrious history last weekend. It's the sequel to 2004's "The Incredibles" and follows the Parr family who must find a way to work together again to combat a new villain who hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot.

Directed by Brad Bird, the films features the voices of Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Isabella Rossellini, Jonathan Banks, Catherine Keener, John Ratzenberger. It has earned a total of 350.3 million dollars in North America for a global cume of 485 million dollars through Sunday.

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures' women-led heist comedy film "Ocean's 8" came in third with an estimated 11.65 million dollars in its third weekend, pushing its North American cume to 100.38 million dollars through Sunday. Sandra Bullock plays Debbie Ocean who has been planning the heist of a lifetime and brings along a crack team of specialists to help get the job done.

Warner Bros, R-rated comedy "Tag" landed in fourth place with an estimated 8.2 million dollars in its second weekend for a North American cume of 30.36 million dollars through Sunday.

20th Century Fox's superhero film "Deadpool 2" finished fifth with an estimated 5.25 million dollars in its sixth weekend. The film has earned 304.15 million dollars in North America through Sunday.
