WASHINGTON, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of U.S. newspapers on Thursday published coordinated editorials to fight back against President Donald Trump's "Fake News" attack on the country's media outlets.

The coordinated move was spearheaded by the Boston Globe, which on the day published an editorial titled "Journalists Are Not the Enemy."

About 350 newspapers took part in the move, according to a tally by the Boston Globe. Yet some media organizations which have published articles criticizing Trump refused to join in, citing journalistic independence.

Trump fired back on Twitter on Thursday morning: "THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA IS THE OPPOSITION PARTY. It is very bad for our Great Country ... BUT WE ARE WINNING!"

Since taking office, Trump has had tense relations with some of the mainstream U.S. media outlets that are critical of his policy or himself.

He slammed such negative coverage by The New York Times, CNN and The Washington Post as "fake news" and called these organizations "the enemy of the American people."
