TOKYO, July 29 (Xinhua) -- At least 24 people were injured as a strong typhoon passed through western Japan on Sunday, local media reported.

Typhoon Jongdari, the 12th one of this season, made landfall in Mie prefecture, central Japan early Sunday, bringing heavy rainfall and gusty winds and causing accidents that resulted in injuries.

After passing through western Japan, the weakening typhoon made landfall in Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu.

As of 9:00 p.m. local time Sunday, the typhoon was around the Saga city, Saga prefecture and was moving southwest-west at a speed of 25 km per hour, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The typhoon, with central atmospheric pressure at 994 hectopascals, had winds at a speed of 18 meters per second near its center, with gusts reaching nearly 25 meters per second, said the JMA.

Heavy rainfall and gusty winds continued to batter wide swaths of southwestern and western Japan, with rainfall of 50 millimeters per hour registered in some areas of Kochi prefecture and 48.5 millimeters per hour registered in some areas of Kagoshima prefecture around 11:00 p.m. (1400 GMT), said the JMA.

The JMA warned about continuous heavy rain and possible high waves, flooding and landslides in western and southwestern Japan.
