KAMPALA, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Uganda will field 41 athletes to compete in seven disciplines at the 3rd African Youth Games in Algiers, Algeria.

The Games, that will include 20 sporting disciplines are deemed as a trial run for the 2020 Olympic Games and will take place on July 17-27.

Arthur Nuwagaba, the assistant coordinator at the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC), said on Thursday that the athletes are all undergoing training ahead of the Games.

"This time we shall also field teams in handball and hockey for the boys," said Nuwagaba.

Brian Kasirye, who reached the second round in the men's singles at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia, will be Uganda's only representative in badminton, while weightlifting will also have one athlete.

The others will be in track and field events, swimming, rowing, handball and hockey.

"I know the competition will be very stiff especially from runners from Kenya, Ethiopia and Eritrea, but I am determined to perform well," said Joshua Kibet, one of Uganda's top young athlete.

The African Youth Games for athletes between 14-18 years is an international multi-sport event held every four years to complement the All-Africa Games.

The first edition was held in Rabat, Morocco in July 2010, while the second one took place in the Botswana capital of Gaborone in May 2014.
