BiH unable to handle migrants' crisis alone: minister

SARAJEVO, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Bosnia and Herzegovina(BiH) is unable to handle the migrants' crisis without international aid, BiH Security Minister Dragan Mektic said Wednesday here during his addressing to country's parliament.

Mektic pointed out that a total of 6,513 illegal migrants have entered BiH since the beginning of this year, out of which 4,000 have already left.

He anticipates that BiH will face the problem of migrants' crisis for years in future and currently, the biggest problem is lack of about 500 border police officers that would maintain the security situation at borders.

The minister said that 60 policemen from BiH Directorate for Coordination of Police Bodies and the State Investigation and Protection Agency were sent on Monday to the eastern border with Serbia, but stressed that country is unable to finance them.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants passed through the so-called "Balkan route" in 2015, trying to reach Western Europe. BiH was then not part of that route.

However, migrants have turned to BiH in recent months, trying to avoid more heavily-guarded routes and borders in the Balkans.
