LJUBLJANA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Slovenian foreign minister Karl Erjavec and parliament speaker Milan Brglez have condemned the violent response of Israeli forces to Monday's protests in Gaza, according to the Slovenian Press Agency STA.

Erjavec said that the events would not have happened if it were not for the relocation of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem which was inaugurated on Monday.

"Two resolutions have been adopted by the UN Security Council stipulating that the status of Jerusalem can only be changed through talks and negotiations. This was a unilateral move by the U.S," said Erjavec.

Erjavec and Brglez both called against the use of excessive force. The speaker expressed deep regret with the U.S. move to recognise Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

"This is unacceptable and is a recognition of unlawful occupation and a direct violation of resolutions of the UN Security Council and General Assembly. It also worsens additionally the situation on the ground," underlined Brglez.

Brglez called on all those involved to respect existing international documents aiming to resolve the issue, labeling them as the only basis for lasting peace and security in the Middle East.

The most recent data suggest that at least 60 people were killed as the Israeli military used force to repress protests in Gaza, said the STA.
